Timket (Epiphany)
Timket, an Amharic word for baptism, is the Ethiopian Orthodox Church’s Epiphany celebration which is observed on January 19 (or 20 in leap year) or Tirr 11 of the corresponding Ethiopian calendar.
It is one of the ost colorful and perhaps one of the biggest religious holidays celebrated to commemorate the baptism of Jesus Christ in Jordan River by John the Baptist. The celebration lasts for three days including the eve.
The eve which falls On January 18 (Tirr 10) is called Ketera. The tabots, replicas of Ark of Covenants, escorted by well dressed singing priests, deacons, and choirs and congregates from every churches march to the public places usually nearer to water bodies, such as river, pools, fountain etc. Two or more tabots from different churches converge like tributaries of rivers along the way to the shared ceremonial sites. In a remote country side the tabots might travel two to four hours to the nearest water body. This is the second times the tabots come out of the churches after the annual respective Saint’s day.
Best Place to celebrate Timket in Ethiopia
Timket is observed in all places where there is Ethiopian Orthodox church. But the festival is much more colorful in the main religious sites in the country. If you want to participate in a more spiritual and old age celebration of Timket, Gonder is perhaps the best place to be at. Make sure to book your flight very early as it is high time for tourist in flow. Timket celebration in Addis Ababa, at Jan Meda, is also equally the biggest mass participating holiday. Lalibela is another important place to celebrate.
