Destination: DEBRE BIRHAN SELASSIE

First built in 1690 by the Iyasu The Great or Iyasu I (r, 1682-1706), Debrebirhan Selassie Church is one of the most remarkable churches in Gondar. The twelve supporting columns around this church represent the twelve apostles and the 13th larger one symbolizes Jesus Christ. The present church was built in 1880s after Sudanese Mahadists army destroyed it. It is worth a visit to see its amazing ceiling with intricately painted angels including the life of Christ, St. Mary, the saints and the martyrs. Churches like this were once quite common in the area, but this is the only church still in use, making it even more of a treasure.
